I may be converted…

By Morgan Bast

I’m used to SWAG.

That is… Stuff We All Get. I’ve grown up in the ski industry and learned from a very young age that a smile and a thoughtful demeanor will go a long way in scoring you the latest gear and accessories. So I guess I’m biased. Sure- you have some good stuff. But will I really like it? Will I like it more than what I’ve spent my hard earned cash on? That’s a tall order.

But I think the Ski Logik Goddesses have done it.

Not that I’ve gotten them for free — I’m working on their social efforts and blogging as well as using my stay-at-home-husband (hire him, please!) to help the guys out at SIA. So I’ve “earned” them. But honestly, I was still skeptical if I would like them more than the Volkl Auras which I’ve talked about tirelessly for the past three years.

Ski Logik Goddesses on the chair

My Ski Logik Goddesses and the hubs' Icelantics

I bought the Auras three years ago at the Ski & Snowboard Expo after drooling over them for two years before that. Every badass chick skier I knew was riding them and I was enthralled. (Don’t worry, Ski Logik – you weren’t around yet – I wasn’t cheating on you.) I’ve been completely monogamous to the Auras and completely happy with what I’ve had.

But like a hot blond that walks by without his shirt on — I was mystified by the Ski Logik Goddesses. They were gorgeous, meticulously made, and eye-catching. I then learned more about the company and the heart that Jeb and Mazz have for their products and how they’ve managed to launch the company into the stratosphere in just one year with the help from numerous family and friends. They attract admirers more than the latest Hollywood starlet. So there had to be something to ‘em.

I finally got them mounted with the Marker Tour F12 over one very long and ski-less weekend and tried them out on one of the biggest powder days of the season. Breck got over 40 inches in a week and I was there two days later to still get some goods.

As I haven’t tested skis in a while, at first I couldn’t figure it out. Then I started singing my favorite amp up song, Barracuda by Heart, and the skis started singing back.

They floated through the pow effortlessly. They cruised over steeps, in and out of moguls, and went in each situation The Windows and Doors at Breck could throw at them.

The real test came last weekend at Monarch mountain. There, we tend to hike, scoot and skate our way around the mountain to get to the best terrain. I was worried that the bindings and the size (13 mm wider and 6 cm longer than my Auras) would hold me back on the hikes in terms of weight. I was totally wrong. I sped up Mirkwood Basin faster than I ever have and was kicking my friends’ fitness-toned butts — on the down as well. I just couldn’t let someone else nab first tracks when I had new skis to test out!

After just three days I may be officially converted and ready to move the Goddesses into my one-ski quiver. I really just don’t know what else could compare…

besides maybe the Howitzer on a nuking day…

Ski Logik Mid-Season Swoon

It’s officially the middle of the ski season in the Ski Logik hometown of Breckenridge, Colo. That means that many skiers are  in shape, thinking of powder, and hungry for some ski porn.

Well, we’re glad we can oblige.

Good skis, good press

SkiLogik is getting a lot of attention lately. And for a company that officially debuted a little less than a year ago (at the end of January), that means big things. Check out what the buzz is all about with some reviews of SkiLogiks here:

“I’d spent a day buttering up Breckenridge’s Horseshoe Bowl in 22 inches of fresh on a demo set of Ski Logik Bombsquads. The experience left me pondering. I needed explanation on how the beautiful wood ski smeared powder one minute then crushed bumps or railed groomers the next. I couldn’t fathom why the featherweight boards felt stable and reassuring underfoot. My curiosity spiked when the skis stood up to every type of terrain yet were such a drastic departure from the epoxied, ABS, and metal laminate weapons to which I’d grown accustomed.
- From “SkiLogik: Handmade in Hainanfeatured in SKIING magazine.

“First things first, these skis are beautiful…but the real question always is: What do they ski like? First impressions [of the Howitzer] were light, quick, nimble, yet with tremendous powder to the edge… The Howitzer really felt like an all mountain machine. A one ski quiver if you will. It definitely held it’s own in the powder and also had characteristics that would make it a wicked touring ski as well as an all round ripper at the ski resort.

“Now, the Bomb Squad is a different story. This ski lives up to it’s name. It is bomber tough. Skiing through the trees they begged me to go faster… I spent the entire day trying to find the top end of the Bomb Squads and never found it. You can bet I want more days on a pair!”
- From “The SkiLogik experienceon Catskiing.ca.

VP Jeb “Marsh and Ski Logik co-founder David Mazzarella have deep Colorado roots. Both have lived here for decades, and the design and construction of the skis they make is directly influenced by the mountains. There are no skinny race skis or carvers. All models are versatile and, like Rabbit on The Roof, the brand uses high-tech construction and materials under its lush wood topsheets.”
-From “Knock on Wood” in The Boulder Weekly.

If not the most versatile ski we have ever tested, certainly in the top 10. This may be the ski no one ever thought could be made. We could fill a page with positive comments; here are but a few:

‘Very fun and can be pushed to do whatever you are willing to do.’

‘A truly great off piste ski that could actually be used in a GS course. Great in bumps, too.’

‘WOW! Amazing fun ski!’
- SkiLogiks’ Ullr Chariot named Overall Ski of the Year by RealSkiers.com.

“The Howitzer was one of the top-scoring skis in the test. The ski was rated a perfect 5 for carving, and a near-perfect 4.5 in all other categories. This combination gives it a stable ride that shreds the backcountry and skis the frontside like a missile.”
- SkiLogik’s Howitzer scores highest in Freeskier Magazine‘s “Homebrew test.”

“New ski manufacturer wins 2011 performance tests – including Ski of the Year award.”
- From PRNewswire.com.

Such is the buzz in the skiing world over Breckenridge-based Ski Logik, launched in January. The all-wood construction, which gives every ski a unique flavor, is catching eyes around the world, and their performance has earned critical praise unusual for a first-year ski model.”
- From “Breck ski maker’s all-wooden skis creating a buzz” in The Denver Post.

“The stability of the ski was what struck me during an afternoon of skiing at Breckenridge. The wood seemed to absorb the bumps and rough snow effortlessly and carve the soft spots with authority, all on a ski much lighter than a similar-size ski of typical construction.”

Ski Logik Howitzer review on TGR

We know we like our skis, but what about the actual skiers that are using them? With this review from the TGR forums and VailCat, apparently they like ‘em.

Snippet of the review:

“Lay them down and get ready fro a poppy super carver that holds as good as any carving ski I’ve been on. Very quick edge to edge and if you load it up you gotta be caefull for they will blast you like a rocket ship out of the turns. Very very poppy.”
